Pontiac was founded by Italian immigrants in 1827 as part of the Chicago area and became an important agricultural center before becoming an industrial town during the late 19th century. Founded on October 16, 1827 by Italian immigrants under the name of Ponte della Vittoria,[2] Pontiac quickly became one of Chicagos most prosperous towns due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Chicago and Oak Lawn Cemetery[3]. The original community was located along what is now Harper Road on land that had been donated by Colonel John Strother for use as a military post.[4] The town grew rapidly thanks to its contributions to agriculture and industry; first settling wheat and corn crops, then building cotton mills and electric lighting plants. By 1840, Pontiac had become one of Chicagos largest cities with over 60 businesses including several banks, insurance companies, newspapers (including The Daily Tribune), government buildings (including three houses belonging to Governor Nicholas Harkins),and two churches dedicated to St Joseph's Arcangeli Chapel and Holy Trinity School. During World War II, Pontiac played an important role in producing munitions for America's war effort; making significant contributions to such activities as aluminum production at nearby Alcoa,[5] steel production at Bethlehem Steel[6], precision instrumentmaking at Fisher Scientific[7], lubrication for locomotives[8], and many other items essential for America's wartime economy. After World War II endedaborations resumed in downtown Pontiac while new businesses were built outside of town limits. Today much of downtown consists of restored Victorian-era structures dating back to 1887 which have been used as office buildings or retail spaces.[9] Today's City Hall Building addition completed in 1987 is also significant – it is one of only two such additions made among dozens across Cook County during that time period.[10] Other notable landmarks include: Lake Michigan Boulevard which forms the municipal border between east suburban Elmhurst (to the south)and west suburban Cicero (to the north)and State Street which connects eastern suburban Skokie with western suburbs Palatine/Wauconda/Grayslake/Lake Forest/Oak Park/Chicago Heights

Pontiac was founded in 1805 by General George Washington and his brother, Nicholas. The city was named for the Roman general Publius Cornelius Pomponius Aquilinus, who led an expedition against the Illyrian Empire in 182 BC. Pontiac's first post office opened in 1824. In 1847, a rail line was built to bring goods to the city from Rock Island. The city grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due to manufacturing jobs and population growth. The American Civil War begins in 1861 and quickly spreads throughout Illinois; Pontiac is one of many communities attacked by Union forces. By 1865, Pontiac has been destroyed by Confederate forces, with only a few buildings remaining standing today. In 1870, Congress passes the Homestead Act which allows settlers in new territories to own land not restricted by title or patent laws. This opens up much of Michigan Territory (now Oklahoma) to settlement; Pontiac is among these pioneers. In 1911, Pontiac becomes the capital of Owce County when it is organized from portions of Johnson County and Van Buren County following county-wide voting reforms enacted that year as part of rural electrification efforts championed by President Woodrow Wilson. The area now known as downtown Pontiac experienced rapid population growth during World War II as military housing developments were established there; however, much of this development died out after the war ended. Since then, downtownPontiac has undergone several facelifts including a $15 million renovation completed in 2009 which increased public access and programming options within its walls while preserving most of its historic fabric; also under construction are two high-rise towers planned for the district (the first being set for completion before 2020).
