The college opened its doors on October 4, 1827. In 1903, J P Morgan founded what is now Morgan Stanley Bank near where he had storefronts since 1877- making him one of the earliest bankers in America outside of Gotham City (). Morgan also founded Lord & Taylor department Store which anchored downtown Pontiac until 1978 when it closed its doors due to hard times (). An early settler in Pontiac was John Middletown who arrived there in 1840 from Connecticut () via Ford River Valley (now Michigan). He established a mercantile business with three partners but failed to make much money because he did not have access to good transportation or marketing skills ().
