The first attempt to shoot at a gun target in Pontiac, Illinois was on July 4, 1814. The original target was a wooden mast that stood near the town’s square. A group of 16 young men from nearby city of Chicago took part in the experiment and were successful in hitting the mast with their rifles. A second shot was fired two days later on July 6th and hit a tree about one hundred yards away from the first mast. On July 10th, another group of 16 boys succeeded in hitting an upstanding post about two hundred yards away from the first mast. These successes led to regular shootings at targets among local farmers and other citizens over the next few years until 1819 when rifle shots became too dangerous and were discontinued. In 1821, an act had been passed by Congress authorizing “the use of firearms for Sporting purposes within this country” which allowed local farmer groups to start shooting targets again with rifles. In 1824, a new target design was instituted which consisted of three huge circles made out of board or heavy logsrigan (a type of oak). This new design proved more difficult for shooters to hit than previous models but eventually helped increase accuracy so that gunshot wounds could be treated more effectively. During World War II, Targetmaster Corporation produced large-scale mockups of both German V-2 rocket launchers and Japanese fighter planes as part of war training exercises for United States military forces

Pontiac is the third-largest city in Cook County and the largest city east of Chicago. It is also the second-largest city west of Chicago. The area around Pontiac has been inhabited by Native American tribes for over 500 years. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pontiac were French traders looking for new trade routes to China. In 1812, General James K. Polk founded a post on the Ottawa River near present day Goodyear Heights to monitor Indian activity in eastern Illinois before he moved his army into that area in 1816 during the War of 1812 as an attempt to stop British expansion into North America. In 1831, a group of investors led by John Prentice bought land north of downtown and began construction on what would become known as "The Promenade." When it opened in 1835, it was one of the most impressive public works projects ever undertaken in Illinois because it was designed to include two wide streets with high walls surrounding a large open space ringed by tree-lined avenues and gardens. The Promenade quickly became popular with residents and tourists alike because it offered an excellent view of downtown Chicago from every window or door within range. Unfortunately, construction cost more than expected and soon came to be known as "The Street Of Shame." To finance their ambitious project, the investorsborrowed money from friends and family members throughout town while also charging high taxes on everything they produced or sold. Ultimately, thepromenade failed due largely to greed rather than good planning or design; Today's version of The Promenade only includes one side (the eastern side) of State Street between I-94 and Western Ave., making it difficult for pedestrians and cyclists to get around safely

Chevrolet and Cadillac were among the first brands to be manufactured there. In 1937, Pontiac also became the home of America's first all-electric car, the Model T). During World War II, Pontiac played a critical role as an munitions plant. The town produced more than 1 million rounds of ammunition for the war effort. After the war ended, Pontiac experienced growth as a suburb of Chicago. However, over time its economy has declined; today it ischoked by high taxes and restrictions on development.
