Pontiac is a city in the Illinois town of Pontiac, located about 25 miles northwest of Chicago. The population was 24,938 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is also home to the University of Central Illinois and Western Michigan University. The first settlement in what is now Pontiac was made by fur traders in 1793. It was named for General John Caton's estate on the Ottawa River. In 1808, during the War of 1812, General James K. Polk called upon General Dearborn to lead an attack against the village of Clinton on the east side of the river. Dearborn instead ordered his men to burn down all buildings within a mile (1 km) of their encampment and retreat back upriver. This destroyed many homes which were later rebuilt as stores or businesses around town. In 1827, when Illinois became a state, it included part of present-day Pontiac Township and had no legal right to do so because Indiana had already claimed that territory before it became a state under Article I, Section 8 of the United States Constitution on March 4th, 1828. So Congress granted its own claim to this township by Act No 2 Of July 3d Anno pro tempore &c., &c., setting forth that "the Township aforesaid be bounded North by said State Line; East by Lake Michigan; South by said Township; West by Springfield." In 1837–38 Samuel Morse built his first mill hereabouts and this early industry helped give Pontiac its name: "The Village where Mills Grew". The first post office was established in 1850 with Wm Halleck as its first mail carrier; but only two years later it was merged into Montrose County's post office system with much larger facilities at Rockford (now Rock Island). By 1860 there were over 100 businesses with a total population over 1,000 residents! Many businesses took part in developing what are now downtown Pontiac including banking companies such as First National Bank and Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company - both founded here soon after becoming national symbols after Ulysses S Grant became president in 1865! There has been much growth throughout recent decades Downtown-wise due largely to several large developers who bought parcels along Main Street from various landowners/property owner groups/eminent citizens before moving into their projects starting2004 until recently... One example would be John Batchelor who started construction on La Grange Place just three blocks away from our current Main Street location starting 2004... He quickly grew popular for bringing high end restaurants like Benares Mediterranean Grill inside his project giving people close access to some world famous attractions without having them drive out too far! Today downtown pontiac offers more than just retail space however - you can find art galleries (like On Point Gallery), movie theaters (including Regal Cinemas), dining options like momos barbeque restaurant or chinese takeout places like Palace Garden Buffet - not mention several bars/nightlife destinations like The Rave Room or Belly Up Tavern! The list goes on!
