This led to some important industrial growth within the town including a foundry which made cannons for General James Kenedy's forces during the Mexican War (1846-48). Another important development came with the construction of Michigan State Road 9 which connected Lansing with Chicago; this led to more jobs for local residents and contributed to an increase in population from 2,500 to 25,000 over just 10 years. Today there are many reminders of those days including several restored buildings from when Pontiac was an engine manufacturer as well as a museum dedicated to AMC history which is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm Admission is free for all visitors!
