Pontiac, Ill., is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,824 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Illinois and fourth largest city in the Midwest after Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Pontiac is part of the Chicago-Naperville- Joliet metropolitan statistical area. Pontiac was founded by Lemuel Plessy on November 7, 1871 as a small trading post near what is now Cicero Avenue and Michigan Street. It grew rapidly thanks to its location on the Mississippi River trade route between St Louis and Chicago. The town became an important railroad center due to its location on both Union Pacific Railroad's main line from St Louis to Chicago and Milwaukee Railway's line from Chicago to Peoria. In 1916, Pontiac merged with Rockford (now Rockford Heights) to form a single municipality with a population of 151,574 people. The opening of Interstate 80 in 1982 led to increased traffic within Pontiac and throughout Cook County; this caused many businesses located within downtown Pontiac to close or relocate their operations out of concern for gentrification or competition from suburban branches of larger companies that could not support such large populations without providing services such as libraries or parks that were essential for residents living outside of downtown Pontiac proper. In 2003, Mayor Tom Barrett proposed changing the name of downtown Pontiac "Plymouth" after Plymouth Township in neighboring Kane County had applied for similar renaming but been turned down because they did not have enough votes to receive approval from City Councilmember Nakia Hendersonhurst as well as other members of then-Councilwoman Hendersonhurst's office who shared her belief that Plymouth should be renamed because it had more ties with nearby Kane County than with downtown Pontiac proper which she felt had less connection thereto historically (Downtown Pontiac proper only received a fraction of total development dollars during Hendersonhurst's time as City Councilmember). Ultimately no vote was taken on any proposal related to changes NAME OF DOWNTOWN PONTIAC - however plans are currently ongoing by some councilmembers group VPontiochiaLA which would rename all streets & avenues eastbound exit ramps southbound entrance ramp Saginaw Road northbound exit ramps Georgette Drive honoraria

Pontiac is a town in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Pontiac was founded in 1853 by John P. Morgan and became a village in 1870. It was incorporated as a town in 1907. Pontiac is named after the Michigan city of Detroit and its founder, John P. Morgan. The first settler at Pontiac was John Ayer who arrived in 1853. He built a cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River and named it Ayer's Cabin after his father-in-law, also called John Ayer from Ontario Canada. In 1870, another pioneer settler, David Herron purchased land southeast of Pontiac and built an log cabin near what is now downtown Pontiac on the Ottawa River. This new settlement came to be known as Herronstown because it lay adjacent to what is now State Road 9W between State Road 8E and US Highway 10 (now I-90). In 1907, when most of Macomb County were consolidated into one county under the name of Cook County,[1] Pontiac became one of the towns within that new county.[2] The first post office opened in Pontiac on July 3, 1907.[3] The community had a population of 375 people when it incorporated as a town.[4] By 1920[5], there were 2,441 residents living in town; however, due to freight railroads running through much of Macomb County during this time period,[6][7][8][9][10] growth slowly slowed until World War II when widespread development led to an increase in population by more than threefold over pre-war levels (−262 people versus 1,522).[11][12][13]:1010 During World War II many buildings were destroyed or damaged by bombing raids such as those conducted against Dresden and Hiroshima; some remaining structures are still standing today including the old High School building which housed both grammar school and high school students from 1935 until 1957[14]:137: “Withholding demolition permits for two years because war production required large numbers of heavy military equipment components didn't mean that much about how well these structures would hold up over time […] But with all indications that most buildings would not withstand anymore bomb blasts but still stand—the decision may have been based more on political correctness than any real concern about their potential destructibility” [15]:137 However only four out of nineteen properties listed above remain extant today according to street addresses alone (Herronstown Lodge #5/19), while others have been demolished or converted into other uses such as apartments or strip malls
