The history of Pontiac, Illinois begins with the settling of the area in 1812 by French Canadians. The first European to reside in the area was Nicholas Côté, who founded a fur trading post on the east side of the river in 1814. In 1836, James K. Polk became president and decided to create what is now Pontiac County as part of his efforts to build a national network of railways. He also decided that an armory would be built west of Chicago so that munitions could be bought and sold without having to go through New York City. Work began on the armory in 1840 and it was finished in 1845. The building served as a munitions depot until 1917 when it was closed down due to World War I shortages.

Pontiac, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Pontiac was organized in 1847 by settlers from Michigan who founded the village on land donated by John Pemberton. The first post office at Pontiac opened in 1851. The name "Pontiac" is derived from French for "bridge over the river Rouge", meaning "bridge over the fast-flowing stream". This name could have been given to any place where a road crossed an estuary or body of water; such as at Montrose on the Fox River in Indiana or Atascadero Creek near San Francisco in California. In 1853, James Montgomery purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land east of Pontiac and west of Mokena for $2 per acre ($64 total). This area became known as Montgomery Settlement and later developed into what is now downtown Pontiac. In 1857, Lorenzo Snow sold 2,500 acres (1 km²) southwest of Pontiac to Edward Gifford for $10 per acre ($224 total). Gifford laid out what would become downtown Pontiac and built sawmills and other industrial facilities there. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and started his term with only three months remaining in his original six-year term as President; he resigned on April 15th because he did not want to be a part of a third term that would end with impeachment proceedings against him if he were re-elected. On May 4th during his final day in office as President before leaving for good to begin his ultimate goal – running for Vice President – Lincoln signed legislation giving exclusive rights to five companies – Andrew Johnson's Ulysses S. Grant Tobacco Company (later renamed Philip Morris), Eli Whitney's Cottonseed Oil Company (later renamed American Tobacco), Jno Cooley's Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company (later merged into Conrail), and George Stephenson's Northern Securities Company (later merged into First National Corporation)—to build roads within designated Congressional districts without having to get congressional approval first or receive compensation from these companies if they failed to deliver their roads on time or within budget—the so-called "Lincoln Roads Act". In addition, this act allowed Abraham Lincoln himself to be impeached should he be removed from office via bribery or fraud charges after being criticized by Congress for failing to meet certain goals set forth in this legislation including expanding suffrage eligibility within Congressional districts while also increasing railroad mileage from ten miles per track down to four miles per track while also overseeing construction projects across America worth an estimated $160 million dollars between 1861–1865 alone!
