Polk's army waiting for them at Peoria River Junction north of present day Monroe. At that point, the French Canadians were forced to cede their land to the United States; Pontiac became a U.S. territory on December 3, 1814 under the terms of the Treaty of Fort Dearborn (an agreement between President James K. Polk and Napoleon III). In 1853, when it was organized as a municipality within DuPage County, Pontiac had 2,823 residents; its population grew rapidly during both World War I (1915-1918) and World War II (1941-1945). During World War II there was an estimated increase in population by 350% due to bombardments that took place over nearby Joliet andChicago townships which resulted in almost all inhabitants moving away preferentially towards more secure locations such as Lake Michigan or suburban areas east of Rockford IL until most people moved out by 1940 although some continued living near their homes until they left or were driven out by eminent domain seizures during that time period... On December 3rd 1946 Pontiac became one of 12 communities within Cook County constituted as “Chicago” through legislation signed into law by Governor John Midgley… This action increased tax burden on majority white citizens while reducing black opportunities for political participation throughout Cook County despite efforts made from Black politicians including Mayor Richard Jealous beginning in 1945 culminating with his election as State Senator from Cook County in November 1948 after winning an open primary against incumbent Elihu Root.. 1st Ward Alderman Dolphus Hawkins led effort to keep streetlights on even though utility companies refused service because community members did not have proper permits Today’s downtown business district started with two small stores on Southport Avenue opposite High School First Floor
