The first gun light was invented by George Washington in 1795. The device consisted of a small, hand-held electric light that could be used to guide artillery pieces during battle. It was not until 1879 that the first permanent gun light system was installed on an American military fortification in Pontiac, Illinois. This system consisted of two red and two green lanterns that were set up at different points along the fortifications wall. Gun lights were also used as signals in World War I and World War II.

Pontiac is a city in the Illinois River Valley in the United States. The population was 25,651 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is one of two cities in DuPage County, Illinois and it is also one of four cities within Kane County. The town was founded by General David Dixon in 1811 as a small post on the confluence of the Illinois and Des Plaines Rivers. In 1821, Dixon's son John Fenton became its first Mayor. On November 5, 1849, during the American Civil War, Pontiac Unionist forces met Confederate troops under General Joseph Kossuth at what is now downtown Pontiac to begin an assault on their rival town's cannons. A combined force of Confederate regulars and militiamen inflicted heavy losses on the Unionists before withdrawing back into DuPage County. The battle has been cited as a turning point in the war for both sides and helped solidify Pontiac's support for Lincoln over Ulysses S Grant eventually becoming president. In 1861, after Abraham Lincoln was elected US President thanks to significant numbers of votes fromDuPage County residents who sided with him over his Republican opponent Andrew Johnson – including then-Mayor Fenton – Pontiac again came under attack from Confederate forces led by General Robert E Lee across the Mississippi River just north of town proper while soldiers were manning Fort Dearborn on Chicago's South Side garrisoned to keep out any potential invaders should such an event occur (a similar scenario unfolded across Chicago days later when Confederate troops mutinied inside Fort Donelson). This time around however, due to overwhelming Unionism concentrated within DuPage Counties' borders (and especially Kane County where much less people lived), no Confederates managed to penetrate into or cross over into our local community until late September 1862 when they did so near Ford City some twenty miles upstream along I-65 just past Sandwich Creek Bridge; this occurred during what are known as "Bloody Sunday" episodes leading up to open warfare state-side that October following Lincoln's re-election that April; not long afterwards though all but three cannonballs shot from those fortifications destroyed or damaged within five hours resulting in many killed/wounded/mourning among civilians living east of Cooksville Rd., south side along I-55 between FM 727 & IL Route 27 & west side along IL Route 56 & Old Danbury Rd./Danbury Rd.– virtually all civilian homes within 10 miles radius were either burned or looted leaving behind extensive damage estimated at $1 million USD today; see photo below right: dear old friends Dodge & Plymouth Motorsports Park located adjacent upon IWO Watersmeet outside Clinton Township... today stillStanding relic left standing abandoned because owner unwilling or unableto maintain facility despite numerous offers since closure back in early 2006! A few weeks later yet another smaller attack took place against same fortification resulting only in minor damage done without loss of life but again these events served as demonstrations that attacking enemy positions directly would result not only with high casualties for both sides but also often disastrous results which tested generalship more than anything else!
