Pontiac, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,045 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is the second-largest city in Illinois after Chicago. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to five jails and two prisons. The site of what is now Pontiac was first settled by French colonists in 1763 as Point de la Salle on the Fox River. The town was named for Gen. James Kempton Pontiac who had died during the American Revolution while fighting for Britain against George Washington's forces. In 1836, following his death, General William Hull became owner of most of present-day southern Cook County and took up residence at Chatham House on State Street in Pontiac which he called Hull's Landing (later renamed Hull's Mills). In 1837, Congress created a new county comprising all of modern Cook County with its seat at Chicago; however, no action was taken on this creation until 1838 when John Pecora designated Pontiac as its county seat because it had more people than Rockford (the original county seat). In 1906, Robert Ford founded Ford Motor Company in Flint Michigan with a small staff and began production of Model T cars here; early products included carriages for delivery by horse and buggy to local farmers. Ford soon moved production to Highland Park near Detroit where it continued until 1968. Ford also built an experimental dragstrip here that became known as "The Strip". Today only a few pieces remain from this era including an old guardrail still standing next to I-94 northbound just west of Plymouth Road exit #2 adjacent to the Brush Belt Bridge over I-294 eastbound just before Interstate 90 enters Ottawa Township

Pontiac is a small town in the Central Illinois Valley, located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Chicago. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Pontiac has been home to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office since 1868 and is also the birthplace of General George Washington Carver. The early history of Pontiac begins with two Frenchmen, brothers Antoine and Jean-Baptiste Marquette, who came to America in 1669 and explored what is now central Illinois. They named their new settlement after their brother, Pierre Gaspard de la Salle, Sieur de Pontiac. In 1765, John Maynard II founded a ferryboat service between Detroit and Monticello on the Mississippi River. This became known as the "Maynard Ferry". Many famous people had used this route including Jonathan Edwards and Ulysses S. Grant. In 1818, Maynard donated land for a courthouse and jail in Pontiac. The first building was built in 1824 on State Street south of Broadway Avenue. The town rapidly grew due to its location close to major transportation hubs such as Chicago and Michigan City; it had a post office from 1827 until 1860, when it joined Cook County; an arsenal from 1830 until 1852; five churches from 1850 until 1870; six schools from 1830 until 1865; four stores from 1840 until 1865; four banks from 1850 until 1865; three hotels from 1840 until 1865; two mills from 1830Until 1860; one railroad line arrival in 1836 The community's growth continued into the 20th century with several industrial plants established during that time: Jardine Rubber Company (1915); American Can Co.(1920s-30s); Ford Motor Company (1925-35); International Harvester(1950s-60s). Today part of downtown Pontiac features several large buildings dating back to that era like Hennepin County Courthouse (1824), Ford Auto Plant (1920), International Harvester Building (1930), Mayo Chemical plant(1945).
