Pontiac, Illinois is a small town located in the northeast corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is home to the Pontiac Silverdome and the Pontiac GTO Museum. Pontiac was founded in 1871 by General John J. Pershing as a steamboat landing on the Kankakee River near present-day Chicago. The first store in Pontiac opened in 1870, and soon became one of the most important commercial districts of Northwest Illinois. The land that would become Pontiac was given to General John J. Pershing by his father-in-law, Solomon Warner, during their visit to Northwestern Illinois in 1857. The veteran general had been governor of Indiana at the time and he wanted to show his support for development within Northwestern Illinois. In 1865, General John J. Pershing purchased 640 acres along what is now State Road 6 east of downtown Pontiac from James Noble for $7000 dollars ($ today). In 1867, he donated an additional 160 acres to be used for agricultural purposes and named it "Pershing Prairie." This donation helped create a farm belt around Pontiac which continues today with corn crops being mainstay businesses hereabouts despite heavy industry now taking precedence over farming elsewhere throughout Cook County (based on2010 Census data). In 1886 when streetcars began service through downtown Pontiac they pulled up outside what is now called "The Bank" on Michigan Street - this made possible shopping ashore without having to go out into town! By 1900 there were over 100 stores downtown with about 5 blocks between Michigan and Dearborn Streets! Downtown business flourished until World War I when many residents left for military duty or other opportunities abroad; before returning home prices increased dramatically making it difficult for some folks to keep up with inflationary trends set by larger cities such as Chicago etc.; however much has changed since then including high viewership amounts coming through downtown every day during football games weekend warriors/teams come down especially early Saturday morning just yards away from our building giving us great exposure weekdays too... As you walk past our building today you can see all kinds of big box stores built lately out west like Macy's etc., but we've held onto our old glory pretty well... Today we have an event center/hall/multi-purpose room (the only one like it west of Chicago), 3 professional theatres (the biggest being right next door), antique mall type shopping area on one side (opened in late 2013) which overlooks Calumet Avenue & lots more recent construction going on inside so it feels almost like a mini city / village even though its only 1 square mile
