The name "Pontiac" has been used for many places since then: • In 1930, the Pontiac Civic League built a park on the corner ofEast Main Street and Huron Avenue to coincide with their annual meeting which took place at that location that year. • In 1944, when General George Patton visited Pontiac while he was commanding Third Army during World War II, he stopped at a local train depot before driving into town to inspect some new tanks being built by Ford Motor Company just north of town. Patton's visit marked the beginning of what would be known as "The Goodyear blimp era" because so many military leaders visiting Pontiac during this time were photographed riding in those vehicles across White City Lake from downtown to North Park Place where they later gave presentations to large crowds gathered inside the Ralston House hotel near Southport Boulevard and State Street. • In 1951-1954,during Eisenhower's first term as Presidentofthe United States, Pontiac hosted both his inauguration ceremonies and his farewell address from atop Mount Rushmore National Monument located about northeast of town on Ulysses S. Grant Road between Summit Road and Bellefontaine Road

Pontiac, Illinois is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 56,932 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is one of the most populous cities in the Chicago metropolitan area and the second most populous city in Illinois after Chicago. It is part of the DuPage County government. The name "Pontiac" comes from Potosi Township and Montrose Township on its east side where two small rivers meet: the Ottawa and Michigan Rivers. The first settler to arrive in what is now Pontiac was John Prentiss who arrived in 1824. He named his new community after him, Potosi (pronounced "pop-tuh"). By 1830 there were twelve families living here and by 1835 there were twenty five families living here. The first store in town opened on May 3, 1837 by Wm Burchfield and his brother Amos Burchfield Sr., both natives of New York state who had come overland with their father as part of a group led by Nathan Sperry to settle land west of Chicago along both banks of the Ottawa River. This location would later become known as North Sideville because it lay near that boundary between Cook County (now DuPage County) and Kane County at that time. In 1851, George Hinkle founded what became known as The Eastern Star Hotel which was located just east of where Interstate 90 currently exits I-290 at Elm Street/Route 805 southbound; this property would later be renamed Hyatt Regency Pontiac whenHyatt Corporation acquired it in 1997 In 1911 Ernest Flournoy opened Pontiac's first gas station with natural gas from an underground well developed northeast of town on what is now Old Cheney Road near Interstate 90 Exit 132B ( formerly State Route 82). Prior to this time all transportation for residents was either horse or cart service which required long trips out into rural Kane County for supplies or for people to visit family members when they could not make it back home during daylight hours. To provide more convenient transportation for residents commuted into town via bus from various points within Kane County including Rockford Hills, Skokie Heights, Lombard Park and other nearby villages On October 15th 1915 a large fire destroyed many businesses including The Western Millinery Company located across Main Street from Fenton’s Barber Shop due to careless storage practices by employees while burning old cloth stock only days prior In 1951 Gannett newspapers purchased all local papers except The News-Gazette which continued publication until 1984 On April 17th 1957 Pan American World Airways Flight 103 crashed intoLake Michigan killing all 153 passengers and crew
