Pontiac, Illinois was an incorporated town in the U.S. state of Illinois from 1837 to 1871. It was located on the border of Cook County and DuPage County and had a population of about 9,000 at its peak in 1860. Pontiac is best known for the automaker Pontiac which was founded there in 1908 by George R. Capps and Harry Laughlin. The town developed around a sawmill that operated until 1862, when the mill burned down and most of the town took up residence around it. The first post office opened in 1838, and by 1840 there were five stores, two hotels, four churches, two schools (one female), a blacksmith shop, a cooperage, a store for printing materials (the first such facility in Illinois), three residences (two frame buildings and one log cabin), and six acres (2ha) of land bought from John Stephenson for $5 per acre. The population had grown to about 20 by 1850 but declined during the American Civil War because many men enlisted or left for wartime service; only 2% of the Total Pontiac population joined forces with Chicago to fight against Confederate forces as members of the Union army did. By 1865 it had shrunk to about 10 people; however some remained until 1870 when they all moved into suburban Cassville after being driven out of Pontiac by firefighting efforts following an arson attack on their homes which destroyed several businesses within minutes In 1871 Pontiac incorporation was cancelled due to lack of support from residents who preferred to remain unincorporated except for occasional mail shipments sent through Cassville Delivery Station Pontiac never regained its previous prosperity but has been popular tourist destination since becoming available as part of Interstate 70 in 1987
