The new owners added a 260-room hotel and other commercial buildings that continue to be used today as planos old downtown core shopping district (known locally as "Old City"). In 1881 Hope College opened its doors in what is now Plano under 32nd Street Bridge with funds provided by Pemberton's son Samuel Silliman Pemberton III who became college president after his father's death in 1865. At that time plans called for Hope College to become affiliated with Northwestern University but this never happened due largely to political reasons surrounding university expansion into new territories at that time including Cook County which would eventually become Chicago . Plans also failed when local leaders wanted more education opportunities for their own citizens while Northwestern wanted access to vast acres of land east of Lake Michigan needed for expanding campus grounds according To date there are still no definitive answers about why these plans never came true however it's speculated that multiple factors such as politics and money may have been involved
Plano was founded by George Dallas in 1836 as a small town on the banks of the Illinois River. By 1849, it had become a village and was renamed Plano after General Sam Houston. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down the brick courthouse and captured Plano during the Battle of Plano. The Union forces destroyed the Confederate burning unit and drove off Confederate retreat. The victory at Plano ended the war in Texas.
