Plano, Illinois is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex of Texas. The population was 138,909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Arlington–Plano, TX Combined Statistical Area. The name "Plano" comes from the Chichagua Maya word meaning "place where there are many trees." The land that would become Plano was donated by Judge John Pemberton to the town of Arlington in 1876. In 1907, Arlington mayor George H. Stephenson changed the name to Plano because it sounded more like Chicago than Dallas or Fort Worth (the other two cities then in Texas). On May 15, 1912, Mayor Stephenson and City Councilman V.E. Colburn dedicated a new park in honor of General Leonard Wood and Mrs. Clara Barton at what is now Holmes Park across from downtown Plano on Sam Houston Parkway/Upper Tollway Road (now I-10). After World War I ended in 1918, plans were made for a military airfield here but this never happened due to lack of funding. In 1935, planers bought 227 acres east of Loop 610 south from Interstate 10 for $1 million dollars with the hope of building an agricultural center that would serve as a model for future suburban growth throughout North Texas and beyond. However Industrialization soon overwhelmed this original idea and only 16 acres were developed although some later became known as "The Plantation." The following year developer Harry Weisenthal purchased another 167 acres just west of Loop 610 for $2 million dollars which he planned to develop into one large housing project called The Colony which would include 63 homesites on 3 interconnected lots measuring 160 feet wide x 100 feet deep with 5 stories each and 4 sets of serviceable doors/windows per lot! Unfortunately when we hit our stride as developers during WW II things went sour with prices climbing 50%+ every year while jobs vanished leaving communities without any real development until environmentally friendly practices such as LEED certification got started! That’s right outside your door folks!!! As you can tell by now we have really taken off since WWII! Plano was incorporated as a city on December 14th 1959 after approval by voters via referendum vote!
