The settlement that became Plano was called Oak Cliff and was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836. They named it after their old home of Dunamis on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The first post office for Plano was established in 1839 and remained in operation until it closed its doors in 1902. In 1870, Hermann Jahn began to plat out what would become Plano with land he had purchased from the heirs of Johnnie Crawford Sr., the founder of Dallas County. His plat included a town square on which a Masonic lodge and other buildings were built; Jahn named this new community "Dallas". In 1872, planters forced through an act of the Texas Legislature renamed their new town Plano after Samuel Colt's factory located near Joliet, Illinois – one of America's most important arms manufacturers at that time – despite objections from residents who thought Colt's factory would result in increased traffic and manufacturing pollution within their small town. By 1880, over 1,000 people lived in Plano; however, by 1900 only about 100 people remained living there due to numerous fires and other natural disasters that ravaged the area during that decade. The region around Plano experienced rapid growth following World War II as millions of Americans relocated to postwar cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago due to wartime industrial production bonuses and expanded job opportunities (the military had also moved into downtown Dallas). To accommodate this influx of workers andilers erected massive housing developments throughout suburban neighborhoods like Deer Park (to the east), Flower Mound (to the northwest), Garland (southwest), Richardson (northwest) and Tomball (southwest). Growth continued through the 1960s when suburban communities annexed more rural areas northeast of Interstate 10; ultimately reaching its peak by 1970 with 2 million residents residing within suburban planning boundaries alone Despite increasing development pressures along I-10/ interstate highway systems nationwide during this period – both positive (+1 million jobs per year)and negative (−1 million jobs per year nationally due to technological advances + larger metropolitan areas) – Boulevard Street between downtown Plano & Interstate 30 still remains one of North Texas' most vibrant shopping districts today
