Plano, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of McLean County. The population was 137,813 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest in McLean County after Chicago. Plano is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The site for what is now Plano was considered by many to be a select spot on the Great Lakes because it had excellent hunting and fishing opportunities, timber resources, and easy access to water transportation from elsewhere on Lake Michigan or from Rock River Valley rivers. In 1836, George Canby selected this location as his new headquarters for American Notes Company with two goals: first, to serve as an important center for business operations; second, to provide attractive surroundings that would lead people to visit him there instead of some other place he might have chosen. The company grew rapidly under Canby's leadership and became one of America's leading paper companies. Canby donated land near present day Interstate 45/I-10 (now called Katy Trail) so that businesses could build stores on high ground overlooking both waterways while still having easy access to each other via streetcar or train connections. This layout would remain until 1978 when plans were made for Plano's current downtown core which included building a new hospital adjacent to Texas Avenue (now I-20). At that time much of central Plano was destroyed in a fire which left over 200 buildings completely uninhabitable including most of downtown; however, during reconstruction efforts many older buildings were restored and renovated into mixed uses including office towers/residential complexes various restaurants/bars etc., creating what has become known as "the old downtown". In 1903 came another major milestone when John Waddell became involved with steel making here followed by construction of Armour World Steel Plant Number One just south of US 90 on Stanhope Street east of Route 66 where today you can see several modules still standing from Waddell’s plant which employed up to 1,500 workers at its peak back then as well as later Harry Stinebeck’s Alcoa aluminum smelting plants nearby along I-635 northwest Of US 90 & Loop 610 east Of I-635

The city of Plano was founded in 1853 by the merging of two small villages, Hilltop and Elm Creek. The village of Elm Creek was located near the present-day site of Plano, while the village of Hilltop was just east of what is now downtown. The first settler in what is now Plano was John Cline, who arrived in 1854. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in the city. In 1865, a schoolhouse and jail were built on North Park Avenue. In 1870, a post office was established and began serving the city. The population increased to 2,000 by 1880; however, it decreased to 300 by 1890 because of lack of development and an economic depression that caused many businesses to close. In 1898, plans were drawn up for the creation of a large expressway through town that would be called the Texas Road (now Interstate 35). However, due to opposition from the local community and concerns about traffic congestion on the proposed highway, nothing happened until after World War I when legislation was passed authorizing funding for a new expressway called Loop 1604 which connected Dallas with Fort Worth via Plano. This project led to rapid growth in Plano during World War II as more people moved into town to work on military bases or industry located along I-35 north of town. After World War II ended and jobs exited downtownPlano experienced another period of decline as many factories closed down and left little income for residents.
