Macdonald, a Scotsman who had emigrated to America as a teenager, decided to make his home in what is now Plano. He named it after his home country—Alba—and also after Lord Aberdeen's estate near Perth Amboy in New Jersey where he had been living for some time before coming to America. The city's growth followed soon after, with new businesses being established throughout its early years. By 1840, Plano had reached a population of over 500 people and was becoming known as an important center for trade and commerce in the region. In 1843, another Scotsman named James Watt moved to Plano from nearby Fort Worth and started an oil refinery that would later be called "Watt Oil". This industrial development helped spur growth within Plano itself as well as surrounding towns and villages around it; by 1870, Plano had reached its current size with a population of over 10,000 people. In 1907 – just prior to World War I – Plano experienced its first tornado outbreak when several large trees were snapped down along Elm Street which left extensive damage across town includingto homes and businesses alike. The storm resulted in $5 million worth of damages which still remains the largest total amount ever inflicted upon any American municipality during wartime times (excluding Hiroshima). This tornado outbreak is also considered to be one of the earliest examples of weather modification or monster storms in history; later studies have shown that this event could not have occurred without modern technology such as photography and aerial mapping capabilities which allowed researchers accurate mapping data for tornado outbreaks which then allowed better predictions for futurestorms
Plano was founded in 1836 by a group of Ohio settlers. A few years later, the United States Congress granted land to the town for a public school. The first students were taught by local farmers. In 1849, the first Post office was established in Plano and it served as the town's main artery until 1959 when it was renamed to Illinois Highway 16.
