The economy of Plano is driven by two primary sectors: government services such as education, healthcare, law enforcement, public safety, and infrastructure projects; and private industry including restaurant chains MCDB & Co., Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., Target Corporation MNRTD-Labsovoexport SRL., PepsiCo USA Inc., Intel Corp., Mastercard International plc., Live Oak Petroleum Corporation LP., drugstore chain Harris Teeter Company Incorporated et al.. Government services account for over 50% of all business revenue while private industry employs over 60% of the workforce. In 1846, the city of Plano was founded by James Caldwell and others. The area that is now Plano was first populated by the Kickapoo Indians. The first European to live in what is now Plano was Dutchman Hendrik de Vries, who arrived in 1690. He bought land from the Kickapoo and built a cabin on what is now Elm Street. In 1793, de Vries married Catharine(Katharine) Postell. They had two children--William and Mary Postell. William Postell served as mayor of Plano from 1892-1894 and as Vice President of the United States in 1897-1898. The Postells financed the construction of a school on State Road 361 near their home in 1892, which became Plano High School. When it opened, it was one of the finest high schools in Texas. In 1893, they also fundedthe building of a church on Elm Street which became First Baptist Church (later called Christ Episcopal). The city's growth continued with other philanthropic endeavors including building two hospitals (one for women and one for men), starting a library system, providing financial assistance to needy families, founding an agricultural society and much more!
