Plano, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. Its population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. The community is located in the northwest corner of Chicago and is bordered to the west by Kenwood and to the north by Park Ridge. To the east it shares borders with Brodhead and Tinley Park. The village of Plano was incorporated on November 6, 1892. It was named for J P Richardson, who had been an incorporator of the village. Richardson's company built a sawmill there in 1892-93 and operated it until 1902. In 1901, Rev John W Sloan donated land to Plano for a public school; construction began in 1903 and the first students were enrolled in September 1904. The school became Plano High School when it opened its doors to students from all over Cook County on October 1st, 1909. Plano originally consisted of about 100 homes on eight square miles (2 km²). By 1912 there were nearly 2,000 people living in Plano including 400 businesses and two hotels. In 1915-16 plans were made to annex what are now parts of Brodhead and Tinley Park but these plans failed because they would have resulted in increased population density within city limits without any corresponding increase in property values or tax revenues. In 1916 Dr George H Boyce founded Northwestern University (now Northwestern Illinois University) here which prompted many residents to move into Plano once Northwestern moved out; this added another layer of development that continued until after World War II when most residents either left or transitioned into professional careers outside of town while new housing developments grew up around town providing more space for everyone else while still keeping prices low enough so that ordinary citizens could maintain their standard of living despite rising costs elsewhere During World War II much planning took place behind closed doors as many people were drafted into service here especially due to its location near Chicago’s manufacturing plants which produced millions of dollars worth of munitions needed by both sides during the war . After hostilities ended most people returned home but some families remained behind as various businesses converted back into civilian status again . By 1949 only 10%of original plano residents remaining lived within city limits although downtown had grown quite large thanks largely to annexation efforts by other municipalities park ridge had annexed much larger portions making it almost entirely an urban area today
