Plano, Illinois was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers who came from the town of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The town was named after John A. Plano, an early settler in the area. In 1841, Plano became a village and in 1865 it became a city. The population of Plano reached 100,000 by 1914 and it grew to over 350,000 by 1950. After years of growth, Plano experienced a slow decline in population during the 1970s and 1980s as new development took hold around the city. However, since the 1990s, growth has resumed and today Plano is one of Illinois' most populous cities with over 1 million residents. Plano's history began with its founding as a small village on the banks of the Missouri River near present-day Streator. In 1841, John A. Plano arrived in what is now Plano from Pittsfield to start his own farmstead and soon realized that he had found something special about this location: it faced north towards Chicago! So he named his new settlement "Plano" after himself and began to build up some infrastructure: a schoolhouse and store were built within two years; a landing on the river for shipping goods was constructed; roads were built leading into town; etcetera. Over time, though plans changed (and even Population moved), what would eventually become downtown Platonio remained largely unchanged – until World War II when many businesses relocated to larger facilities east of downtown because there was no room west of Lincoln Avenue for them! By then however things had started moving again – Downtown planned out again with cultural events (such as art shows) happening throughout the year along side traditional farming activities that produced cornmeal for local baking purposes (until Bakerella Foods bought out hometown planter Jens Ditlev). This continued until 2005 when plans emerged for demolition/renovation/updating/new construction on much of Downtown which would result in loss of jobs/historic significance & environment… resulting in public outcry (& more than $350K govt investment to reverse course); success ultimately secured through community engagement led planning process culminating in issuance of Landmarks Ordinance 🙂 platoonexil
The city of Plano, Illinois was founded in 1837 by John C. Frémont and his brother Charles. The town was named after the Mount Prospect estate where the Frémonts lived during their early years in Illinois. In 1839, the Frémont brothers developed a small farm on what is now Elm Street in Plano. They began to sell produce from their farm to local residents and eventually built a store on Elm Street to serve those customers. The store prospered for many years and became one of the most important businesses in the town. In 1865, John A. Babcock arrived in Plano from Minnesota with his family and started a grocery store called The Bates Store on Elm Street. Babcock quickly became well known as an entrepreneur in Plano and also helped make plano into one of the leading cities in Illinois. He donated land to build a new school and church building on Elm Street, which are still used today as part ofPlano's civic center complex. In 1881, Joplin Forman moved to Plano from St Louis Missouri with his family and started another grocery store called The General Store on Elm Street. Forman quickly became well-known within plano for his entrepreneurship and later donated land across Elm Street from The Bates Store to build what is now City Hall Park (now home to Plano High School). He also established several other businesses including a bakery, gas station, post office, restaurant/bar, auto parts store, bowling alley and more throughout the city over time.
