Richardson as a military post on the prairies west ofChicago. Richardson named it for his friend and business associate George Prentice Planter. In 1871, Richardson donated land to make up what is now downtown Plano; this donation included a tract of land that would become Willis Tower (now One North Center). In 1902, Willard Wirths donated money to build the first high school in Dallas County. Plano's first shopping center opened in 1949 on Elm Street near Michigan Avenue and Addison Road Chicagoland Plaza opened its doors in 1957 across from Parkland Hospital & Medical Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospitalocooperatives were located throughout downtown until 1978 when they closed because of economic conditions then plans began to redevelop most of the core with mixed use buildings including office space and residential units while some older shops continued to operate until 2003 when they closed again due to redevelopment plan changes In 2006-2007 there was an effort underway by DuPage County officials led by Mayor Dwight Daley which aimed to revitalize much of downtown Plano with tax Increment Financing (TIF) funding through private developers who pledged to spend $225 million over 10 years increasing retail employment opportunities along Main Street eastward from State Parkway all the way out into Midtown where new light industrial/office development has taken place notably around FirstEnergy Stadium adjacent IKEA . Plans called for re-opening several historic businesses closed during the earlier redevelopment such as The Woolen Mills which closed in 1984 but reopened as JCPenney under new ownership before being sold again in 2013 The current plan calls for demolishing most if not all these buildings (with exception for IKEA) then replacing them with mixed use buildings which would include office space and residential units occupying different floors within similar large building blocks creating a “city within a city” scenario
Plano was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, U.S.A., on the banks of the Des Plaines River. It was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1871 and lost its post office status in 1932. The community is now part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
