By 1810, Plainfield had about 100 residents and was doing well as a commercial center with prices for goods such as flour, pork products, soap, beans, etc., being higher than those in nearby towns such as Danville or Rockford because it had easy access to transportation links through land routes that connects it to Chicago via Indiana State Road 6 (now I-94). In 1825–26 James Hutton located his mill on the banks of the Des Moines River near what is now downtown Plainfield. This venture led to new economic development in Plainfield which included brickmaking (the first bricks ever made in Illinois) and wagon manufacturing; these endeavors also brought more people into town during this period. In 1836 James Hutton's son Augustus founded DeKalb Normal School which evolved into Northwestern University today; both institutions are still headquartered there with over 3800 employees across various campuses including 8Research Institutes within Last Call Laboratories

Plainfield, Illinois was founded in 1814 by Joshua Plainfield and his wife Rachel. Joshua was a surveyor who had surveyed the area that is now Plainfield. The first settler in what is now Plainfield was John Blackman, who arrived in 1816. By 1820, there were over twenty families living in what is today Plainfield. In 1825, the town of Plainfield was incorporated as a village. From its incorporation until the early 1800s, Plainfield functioned as an agricultural community with small-scale livestock farming and commerce conducted mainly through local merchants. In1805, the Potosi family moved from Holland to wagon country near Springfield where they began to grow corn for export to Europe. In 1808, Amos Potosi and his brother Jeremiah bought about forty acres of land at the junction of I-70 and Kankakee Road. They started raising horses for milk and woolen textiles but soon realized that this operation would be too costly to continue indefinitely so they decided to build a barn and sell milk and eggs directly to their customers. This became the beginning of potosi farm production which continued until around 1870 when modernization began sweeping America and grocery stores opened up which made it possible for people to purchase goods not only domestically but also internationally (i.e., buying items like flour from England). Consequently, agriculture decreased significantly while industry increased significantly making Plains Field an important node in American development during this time period
Plainfield was founded in 1825 by Daniel Webster and his family. The town was named for the Plainfield River, which flows through it. The first settler in Plainfield was John Howland, who arrived in 1825. In 1829, the Illinois General Assembly designated Plainfield as the seat of a new circuit court. The legislature moved the court to Elgin in 1830, but when that city declined to take over the seat, Plainfield took it. In 1834, the state legislature established a school district that included parts of Plainfield and other towns in Central Illinois. The town's first store opened in 1828 and its first school was built in 1830. In 1840, two miles (3 km) north of town on State Route 41 were two small villages called Westville and Eastville. When State Route 61 was completed four years later, Westville became part of Plainfield while Eastville remain outside of it. In 1865, an act creating a township within plainfieldschool district created several new settlements within it: Deer Park (1866), Elmwood (1867), Forest Hills (1868), Mount Prospect (1869), North Arlington (1870), Pageantown (1871), Sewardstown Heights (1872) and Waukegan Heights/Wauconda Heights (1873). In 1870–71, a canal was built leading from Ogden Lake into the then-new Chicago River near present-day Wood Dale to provide water power for mills located along its route. This development helped make Plainfield one of the most important settlement nodes along Chicago's riverfront during this period. By 1880, there were 1,500 residents living in plainfieldschool district alone; by 1920 there were 10,000 residents living there. A rail line connecting Chicago with Streator via Joliet ran through plainfieldschool district from 1901 until 1945; after that time all passenger service ceased except for freight operations between Joliet and Streator operated by Budd Company Railroad Yard at Downers Grove east of downtown Chicagosharing point
