Plainfield is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,193 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Plainfield was organized in 1837 and named for Colonel John Plainfield (1784-1860), one of the original proprietors of this township. The first post office at Plainfield was established in 1839. In 1847, a school house and grist mill were built there; both were destroyed by fire in 1863. A new school building was erected in 1865 and a church also built in that year. The first store on Main Street opened there in 1868. A blacksmith shop was added to the village in 1889 and another store opened there in 1902. In 1907, the main line from Chicago to Peoria via PlainFIELD passed through the village; this made it possible for Plainfield to become an important transportation center for southern Illinoisans during the Progressive Era movement. In 1925, when sectionalism began to grow strong throughout Illinois, as it did nationally, Mayor John Fenton convened a meeting of all township trustees to discuss ways to handle complaints from residents about their share of property values differing greatly from those living north or west of Interstate 90 near downtown Chicago. After much discussion and some public hearings throughout November 1925 and December 1926, a new zoning ordinance went into effect which allowed private developers to build large blocks within township limits without affecting the quality or character of these homes nor causing any undesirable effects on neighboring properties such as farms or woodlands which often adjoining tracts had been used up for farming since early nineteenth century even beforezonation became law! This significant development helped bring more mixed use housing developments within our borders with less impact on rural/ historic neighborhoods located outside our boundaries hitherto! However, economic stagnation during the Great Depression led to a decline in population and revenue until the late 1960s when an influx of manufacturing workers caused growth again. Today, Plainfield is a thriving community with many cultural attractions including two universities (Universities at Joliet and Northwestern).
The town of Plainfield was founded in 1811 by the Reverend David M. Jones, a Presbyterian minister. The town was named for Captain John Plainfield, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a justice of the peace. In 1831, Plainfield became a village and was renamed Plainfield Village. In 1865, Plainfield Township was formed and in 1887, it became a city.
