Plainfield is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 83,821 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth most populous city in Illinois and the twentieth most populous municipality in Cook County. The economic center of Plainfield is its downtown district which includes the shopping mall Ironton Place and several housing developments along State Street. Other major businesses include JCPenney, Sears, Macy's, and Kohl's. Plainfield also has a large agricultural sector with many mills and farms in the area surrounding town. The name "plain" meaning simply "plain" or "level land", first appears on maps of this area as early as 1814 when David Dixon named a tract of land after Captain Jonathan Edwards (1747-1819) who had been his commanding officer during the American Revolution. Captain Edwards had fought for the British side against America during that conflict but later switched to support independence. In 1814-15 General James Kieft purchased 4000 acres (1 km²) of what would become Plainfield from David Dixon for $5 per acre ($0.30 per sq mi). This included what is now Downtown PlainFIELD as well as present day areas east of Ironton Road including rural Addison Township and northwest suburban New Lenox Township. On November 24, 1830 a public meeting was held to discuss platting out township boundaries with three other townships in Cook County: Arlington Heights (north), Streamwood (southwest), and Wheeling (east). At this meeting it was decided that Vernon Township should form part of Arlington Heights; Richmond Township should form part of Streamwood; and Webster Township should form part of Wheeling because those townships were then all within one county - Cook County - rather than being separate counties due to their geographic proximity to each other." These decisions laid down basic boundaries for future municipalities which continue to be important today such as Ironton Place zoning district located just south of State Street near downtown full stop with no intervening residential development since straight State Street bisects Vernon/Webstertown while Riverwoods extends into Arlington Heights through an open space between them both streetsides forming an enclave surrounded by Vernon on one side while Websterotte forms an open space between Riverwoods on the other side making it difficult if not impossible for people living east or west of Riverwoods Avenue to get inside either Vernon or Webstertown without leaving their cars parked outside." In 1836–37 John Greenleaf Whipple surveyed lands lying northward along Chicago River betweenState Street & Water Tower Hill thenceforth called Whipple's Ridge & Surveyed Stillwater Creek Valley extending thenceforth northerly thro' Waukegan Mills & village limits etc.. In Plainfield, Illinois, the city has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. The area that is now Plainfield was originally settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1812, the General James K. Polk called for a census of this region and found that only 5% of the population lived in villages or towns. The land around Plainfield was bought and sold until 1848, when it was gifted to John Smeaton who made it into an agricultural town. The first store opened in 1850 and logging began in earnest in 1862. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in plainfield and its population had grown to over 1,000 people. The city experienced great growth during World War II with production at Union Carbide Corporation reaching a record high. The war also helped spawn many new businesses including restaurants, theaters, and other commercial establishments on North State Street between Second and Third Streets which are still active today. After the war ended, Plainfield went through a period of tumult as many residents left for better opportunities elsewhere. However, since 2000 things have been improving with job growth being one of the most common themes throughout town’s history. In recent years, Plainfield has become known for its annual Apple Festival which attracts thousands of visitors each year from all over America and Europe alike!
Plainfield was founded in 1814 by Adam and Catherine Howe. The town was named for Daniel Plain, an early settler. In 1825, the federal government purchased land in the town from private owners, making it a part of the Illinois Territory. In 1828, the legislature created a school district in the territory and Plainfield became one of its initial schools. In 1840, Samuel Morse built a mill on the Black River in Plainfield and began to produce wire rope. The town grew rapidly during this time and by 1847 had over 1,000 residents. In 1850, Plainfield joined with other towns in DuPage County to form the new city of Chicago. By 1861, however, Chicago had grown too large for Plainfield and it merged with neighboring village of Lombard into one municipality. By 1865, as all but two of DuPage County's municipalities were merged intoChicago proper (the last being West Side Village), Plainfield also became a part of City Hall District No. 3 which included most of what is now Cook County today save for some neighborhoods on the Far South Side that remained separate until after World War II when those neighborhoods were annexed by Chicago proper.
