Plainfield, Ill. is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,621 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Plainfield was founded in 1837 by English immigrants and has been home to a variety of cultures since then- including Italian, German, Irish, Scandinavian and Polish settlers. The first settler in what is now Plainfield was George Brown who arrived in 1837 with his family from Norfolk, England on the SS "Fortunato." George's brother John built an inn on what is now State Street which became the nucleus for what would become Plainfield. In 1840 John Brown sold most of his property to Joseph Gurney who platted and named the town after himself- Gurney's Grove being located near where Broadway intersects Hubbard Street today. In 1847 Jacob Kline bought land from Gurney and erected a gristmill on current day Elm Road. This mill continued production until it burned down in 1903. A new mill was built on present day Elm Road and operated until 1951 when it also burned down. Today that mill remains vacant as it has not been used for many years It should be noted that this particular event happened just one year after Ohioan Amos Kendall purchased 4 acres adjacent to the old mill site and began building what would become Kendall Park-. Successive waves of American families followed suit over ensuing decades granting commerce and development opportunities to Plainfield residents- often resulting in increased diversity within its borders due to crosscultural contact (e.g., Italianate architecture found throughout much of central Illinois; Polish settlement along Harrison Boulevard). In 1882 Mayor Samuel Hickey appointed Arthur Thornburgh asAgent for purchasing goods brought into this country by steamboats from Canada by way of Lake Michigan- Thornburgh becoming known as "the Father of Ice Cream" because he helped create two generations of local creameries which still operate today (Thornburgh Statedry & Creamery Museum). By 1906 plainFIELD had a post office (founded in 1870), school district (1890), jail (1911), newspaper office(1892) and two churches ([First Congregational] 1905; [Second Presbyterian] 1907). Agriculture played an important role during early days with numerous small gardens dotting the landscape; however more progress came about through industrialization which led to larger plants starting up such as J&P Mills(now Archer Daniels Midland)and Wabash Copper Corporation- later making their mark on Plainfield with their plant housing America's first television sets! One particularly noteworthy company founder who made an impact on early 20th century life hereabouts was Cyrus Adair IIIwhose candy business flourished during Prohibition era despite state prohibition laws prohibiting alcohol sales across state lines! adair constructed one notable building locally- Adair Manor currently housing several cultural organizations including The Edge Theatre Company- predecessor to current Chicago Shakespeare Theater! With rapid growth came social consequences detailed herein: many young people left for good reasons including PLAINFIELD'S FIRST WHITE RACE MINORITY - prior thereto there being only 1/4 black inhabitant upon founding date! As industry picked up pace so too did poverty ensuing various strikes/obstructionism culminating finally with incorporation into Cook County government circa 1951!!! In short; while some aspects have changed greatly over time quite a bit has stayed essentially same or even improved !
