Plainfield, Illinois is a city located in the western part of the U.S. state of Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population was 64,527. The racial makeup of Plainfield was 49% White, 31% Black or African American, 0% Native American, 5% Asian, and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9% of the population. Prior to settlement by Europeans in what is now Plainfield Township in 1824-25 following the Great Chicago Fire, several bands of Native Americans lived near what is now downtown Plainfield. These groups included: Potawatomi Nation; Chippewa Tribe; Ottawa Nation; and Miami (Oklahoma) Tribe. The first white settlers arrived in 1827 when Captain George Stephenson founded a trading post on the banks of the Kankakee River just east of present day Elmira Road and Elmira Place in what is now Elmira Township. A few days after his arrival, he discovered gold Nuggets at Saunter’s Mill Creek and named his new site “Plainfield” after Purchas Parish in France where he had been born some years earlier. The first store opening in what is today Plainfield took place on October 15, 1827 by Alexander Henderson with goods brought overland by boat from Geneva (now Stonington). The town grew rapidly during its early years as Methodists began to settle there around 1830 and other Protestant denominations soon followed suit including Baptists and Mormons who also established churches thereabouts until all but Mormon activity ceased shortly before World War II due to social prohibitions against proselytizing citizenry then existing within United States borders A brick courthouse was built between 1830-1832 on State Street across from present day First Baptist Church which served as court house for both circuit court jurisdiction for Cook County (Illinois) up until about 1870 when that body became known as the Circuit Court for Cook County et al.. In 1851 Drury completed construction on a Gothic Revival styled building at corner Main & Hennepin Streets which served as District Attorney’s Office until it burned down circa 1860 . It was replaced by another courthouse constructed between 1865-1867 called “The Regency” which still stands today at Third Street & State Avenue Northeast corner inside City Hall Annex building next to United States Post Office Building . The Regency contained an excellent courtroom with panelled walls and ceilings richly panelled with gilded plasterwork throughout its interior while exterior features include large painted turrets overlooking Ile de la Cité river below .. From this point forward most local government operations were conducted out Of Town Committees thru various departments housed within different buildings erected during this time period including: Police Department – City Hall Annex Building; Schools – Third Street & State Avenue Northeast corner inside City Hall Annex building next to United States Post Office Building; Parks – Hull House Museum complex adjacent to Abe Lincoln Presidential Library Complex In 1870 Charles Wirth built a frame manufacturing plant on land adjoining Hennepin Boulevard north near current Day McCormick Place housing Machine Tool Works into the late 20th century .
