Plainfield was founded in 1824 by John Stephenson. The town was named for a plain that extended eastward from the village of Plainfield, and which served as an agricultural area. The first settler in Plainfield was George Wilkinson, who purchased 640 acres of land from the Soo Indians. In 1827, Stephenson donated two lots to the village of Plainfield for public use. In 1828, the first school in Plainfield opened its doors. In 1840, money was raised to purchase 17 acres of land south of the village for a courthouse and jail. On November 10, 1840, the cornerstone for the new courthouse was laid by Mayor James Riddle. The First Jury Trial occurred on December 3rd, 1840 and resulted in a guilty verdict against Joshua Hillyer for embezzlement from a company store owned by John Ballantine. The Second Jury Trial took place on March 12th, 1841 and resulted in an acquittal verdict against Hillyer On October 26th 1861, (the day after Lincoln's inauguration), Robert Hinsdale erected one of Chicago's earliest successful grain elevators at 7 Wacker Drive near what is now Douglas Park
