However, following the war's end, industry declined while taxes rose sharply and Mayor Edward Bennett lost his re-election bid in 1949 to Richard Moseley. In those years Plainfield saw few new arrivals until after suburban development began along Northwestern Expressway (I-290) in the early 1960s which led to more people moving into Plainfield from other nearby townships and villages such as Lombard and Puslinch Township. In recent decades there has been much growth within Plainfield as a result of annexation by Lombard Township; construction of a Regional High School; addition of new housing developments including Bear Creek Estates; expansions at Hennepin County Park; establishment of two churches - First Presbyterian Church (founded in 1888) which services both inside and outside Ofallon Cemetery near Interstate 90 Exit 176A; new business ventures such as whollyowned Jaxx Corporation which opened up shop at One North Center Drive in late 2018 followed by another store - KFC next door - later that yearopened up operations inside Ofallon Cemetery adjacent to Hennepin County Park expansion project continue

Plainfield was founded in 1833 by Nicholas Brown and his wife, Rebecca. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Illinois River, and it became a leading center for business and education in the region. In 1848, Plainfield became the first city in Illinois to be incorporated, and it continued to grow as a thriving metropolis until the late 19th century. During the early 20th century, Plainfield experienced significant growth as a result of its strategic location as an important trade center between Chicago and other northwestern states. However, during World War I Plainfield was impacted negatively by both industrial production and military activity in nearby Hoffman Estates. After the war, Plainfield struggled through periods of economic decline before rebounding in the mid-20th century with new development (such as the construction of Interstate 55) that has continues to this day.
The Plainfield community was founded in 1834. The first settler in the area, Isaac Hill, purchased a tract of land east of what is now Plainfield from the Sauk and Fox Nation. He named it Prairie Point after his home point on the Great Lakes. In 1836, Hill's son-in-law, John Webster, also moved to Plainfield and began to grow corn on his farmstead. However, Webster did not have any children so he started a wagon train that carried goods upriver to Chicago for sale. This transportation link helped spur development in Plainfield and neighboring towns such as Elgin and Aurora. In 1847, Abraham Lincoln made an appearance in town during a campaign stop before heading off to Winnetka for another speech at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. This event led to increased business in town and more people moving into the area. In 1865, when Illinois became a state, Plainfield became one of its first municipalities within its boundaries. In 1896, Edward J. Daley took office as mayor of Chicago and soon realized that there was potential for growth in Plainfield if city services were provided specifically to the community instead of being delivered through larger municipalities such as Chicago or Aurora. Accordingly, Daley created The City Council which functioned as an advisory body with jurisdiction over issues such as public works (such as streetlights), zoning regulations (e.g., limitations on building size), economic development (including job creation within certain areas), fire prevention/emergency response/civil defense measures (e.g., traffic signals) and street cleaning ordinances (zoning changes). Since then, The City Council has been instrumental in developing many aspects of downtown Chicago including subway construction; redeveloping riverfront properties into luxury housing developments; creating new parks; expanding educational opportunities within The City Council’s limits; providing funding for local arts organizations; providing support for citywide initiatives such as Parkour competitions; developing plans for changing current infrastructure including bike lanes and pedestrian crossings
