In 1857, the first revolver was designed and patented. It fired a round that had been bored into a metal barrel about 2 inches in diameter. Plainfield was platted in 1836 as part of a survey of the Northwest Territory and became a city on January 1, 1893. The first post office in Plainfield was established on December 12, 1838. The present city hall and other government buildings were built in 1909–10 by mayor John J. Kennedy and were designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1984.
The town of Plainfield was founded in 1811 by Josiah Quincy and his wife, Lucy. The first settler in the town was John Nicholson, who arrived in 1812. The population of Plainfield increased rapidly from its initial population of six residents to over fifty by 1820. In 1825, the Illinois General Assembly created the township of Plainfield out of parts of the former village of Batavia. The original plat for Plainfield Township appeared on a map dated January 1, 1827. In 1830, Samuel Miller purchased land east of what is now US-51 and platted what would become the city limits of Plainfield. Miller's plat included a large lot between State Street and High Street which became home to much later neighborhoods such as Walnut Hills and Crystal City. In 1833, John Fenton moved to Plainfield from Moline with his family and began growing corn on his farm west of US- 51. That year, Fenton donated land for a public school which was built on what is now Elmira Road. In 1840, he donated land for an ecclesiastical cemetery which became known as North Point Cemetery today. In 1861, when Lawrence County was formed from part of Kane County, PlainFIELD Township joined with it to form Lawrence County proper. In 1870-71 When Normal School opened in Normal Heights (now Chicago), many students from plainfield walked or took buses to reach it; there were no trains until 1886!
