The village of Plainfield also includes parts of the unincorporated communities of Arlington Heights and Glen Ellyn. The land that would become Plainfield was first purchased by the Hamlin family in 1836. In 1837, two brothers founded the village of Plainfield on what is now east side of street US 60 near present day Elm Street. The Hamlins were instrumental in helping to create the township form from land surrounding their farmstead on what is now west side of Elm Street. In 1846, John Fenton laid out a road through what is now Plainfield and Arlington Heights as part of his plan to develop these areas into villages separate from Chicago. This became known as Route 66 or "The Highway". Today this highway still carries many namesakes such as I-55 (in Bloomington), I-465 (in Danville) and I-94 (in Oak Lawn).

Plainfield is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. The first black person to live in Plainfield was James Fenton in 1876. The town of Plainfield was platted on April 11, 1837 by John Hodge and Nathan Bedford Wright. It was named after theplain field where George Washington had fought his Farewell Address. The first settler in what would become Plainfield was Enoch Pratt who arrived with his family in 1838. There were only 10 residents in 1840 when the township became a part of the new county of Cook. In 1846, an act of Congress created a new township called Prairie View which bordered on PlainFIELD to the south and west and had a population of 362 people (the townships formed from Prairie View did not have any voting power). In 1848, another act created village form within Prairie View Township called Chicago Heights which had a population of 1,500 people. Chicago Heights became a city on May 4, 1860 when it merged with Evanston into the larger city of Chicago. On January 1st, 1865, as part of the Union army's withdrawal from Illinois following General Ulysses S Grant's surrender at Appomattox Court House there began what is known as "The Great Migration". More than two million people departed during that period for various reasons including political unrest and economic hardship among others; many came to America looking for opportunities they could not find back home. As American society changed with increased industrialization and urban growth throughout Northwestern Illinois – Plainfield saw its share as well; families abandoned their rural homes for newly built communities closer to amenities like railways and shopping malls while many businesses closed due to competition from more developed areas outside of town limits such as Skokie or Oak Park. By 1925-1926 about 60% of all residents lived within 2 miles (3 km) of one major highway leading intoChicago or Springfield making joblessness less common but also increasing rates for crime rates both violent and nonviolent combined especially around downtown areas now known as "The Loop." Today much remains unchanged since those early days - including beautiful examples like Main Street Square revitalized by local businesses & artists hosting annual festivals/ fairs during summer months
