In 1840, James Kapp founded Kapp's Mills which became one of Illinois' largest textile manufacturers. In 1865, Samuel Morse established his Morse Belt Railroad between Chicago and Springfield to carry goods across the state line into Illinois from Indiana and Missouri through Kapp's mills; this railroad helped make Plainfield one of the leading industrial towns in America during this period. As industries declined during much of the 20th century, Plainfield experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for nearby Rockford; however, its high school dropout rate remains one of America's highest (at more than 30%). Plainfield is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. Plainfield was founded in 1848 as an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Des Plaines River by Methodist missionaries and settlers from Detroit. The Village of Plainfield was organized on July 1, 1848, from portions of Hamlet and Derby townships in Wayne County by a committee appointed by the General Assembly of Illinois. The site for what would become Plainfield was chosen because it lay near two large rivers - the Des Plaines to the east and Chicago to the west - which could provide water power for mills or be used to irrigate land. The first store opened in what is now downtown Plainfield on October 4, 1849. In 1863, Missouri Pacific Railroad established a depot here; this aided development of commerce within plainfield as well as across Kane County and into neighboring counties. By 1870, there were nine stores and three hotels in downtownplainFIELD alone; this growth continued until about 1900 when brick buildings replaced wooden structures throughout much of town center. The town grew rapidly and by 1854 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1857, the town voted to incorporation and became a village. In 1865, Plainfield voters passed a resolution to name their new city after General Ulysses S. Grant, who had served as president of the United States during the American Civil War. The city continued to grow and by 1870 it had over 6,000 residents. By 1900, Plainfield had nearly 12,000 inhabitants and was one of the largest cities in Illinois.
