African-Americans began settling here starting with John Witherspoon who purchased land around 1854 and built himself a white cabin known as White Knob. He also developed a business that included wagonning shipments of salt water fish to Chicago for people living near the Great Lakes region. By 1870 there were over 100 black residents living in Plainfield according to local historian Mabel Lewisohn Coleman Jr.'s book "From Slavery To Freedom: The History of Black Settlers In Illinois" In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Union territory through Iowa and Missouri, many farmers fled westward into plainfield looking for protection from Confederate soldiers camped along the rivers and streams nearby. Many members of the Aitken family made their way west as well including Samuel's father Elijah who died fighting for his country before reaching our city. After the war ended most white folks moved back east while black folks continued moving westward into what is now Plainfield until all but two families left following World War II when racism against blacks disappeared across America
