After his death, Congress passed legislation naming Springfield “George Washington National Cemetery” in memory of him – but no one ever lived there permanently because Springfield reverted back to local control following his death. In 1847, General George Mclain founded Peoria as an agricultural community on land granted him by Governor John Altgeld for this purpose。 When he died two years later at age 71%, Peoria’s infant city still lacked basic infrastructure such as water supply or streetlights; however, it soon took off thanks to its economic vibrancy and support from military veterans who created numerous businesses including cattle ranching, lumber milling, manufacturing and banking products throughout the 1850s 。 By 1860 over 1 million people lived within 3 miles (5 km) of downtown Peoria while also employing over 100 thousand workers 。 Manufacturing accounted for 60%of all business activity while agriculture only generated 5%. In 1865 Mayor Lorenzo Dowell opened up Chicago's first municipal theater which quickly became known throughout all Midwest for providing quality entertainment without charged admission 、and helped spur development along First Avenue eastward into today's Loop neighborhood 、while also stimulating social & cultural innovations like temperance laws being enacted across many Midwestern states ….. It wasn't until 1893 when Comptroller Arthur Pomeroy recommended annexing Lake Michigan suburbs such as Lemont & North Barrington due to lack of railroad access that Peoria finally received annexation……… This growth spurt continued until 1903 when internal strife caused economic decline followed by increased competition from neighboring cities………….. With only 2Arena soccer stadiums left standing among nearly 500 built between 1890-1920 (!),today's professional sports teams are largely credited with helping revive downtown redevelopment efforts….. Peoria was founded in 1847 by John and Catharine Wright. The Wrights were the first white people to reside in Peoria. They built a log cabin on the site of what is now the First Baptist Church. In 1850, they married Anna Maria Blythe. The Wrights served as mayors of Peoria from 1875 to 1887 and again from 1893 to 1897. They also chaired the city council for thirteen years.
