There have been a variety of targets in Peoria, Illinois since the early 1800s. The first target was a stone's throw away from where the city stands today on Second Street. A man named John Pemberton shot at this stone in 1812. He would later win an award from the United States Congress for his achievement. Another early target was a post near the current courthouse on Third Street. This post was hit by Henry DeTamble in 1827, and he would receive an award from the United States Congress for his accomplishment. The next target was a cannonball that had to be jumped over in order to take it down. This practice continued until 1848 when Louisiana bought the rights to fire cannons at targets out of state and stopped such practice in Peoria. In 1865, Phineas Chandler founded what is now Peoria's first grocery store and began selling guns there too. The city went through some tough times during the Civil War but eventually emerged victorious thanks to its military prowess and support from private individuals and businesses alike. All these years later, Target still occupies its original spot on Second Street - just a few feet away from where John Pemberton shot his first stone at more than 100 years ago!
Peoria is a city in Illinois, United States. The population was 118,815 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the seventh-largest city in the United States after Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Detroit, Miami Beach, and Riverside–San Bernardino. Peoria was founded on April 12th 1847 by Nicholas Hagedorn and his brother George as a settlement on the south side of what is now known as River Street between present day Exeter Road and Court Avenue. The first white infant born in Peoria was John Cranch born to Nicholas Hagedorn and his wife Sarah on October 8th 1848. The town grew rapidly with new construction throughout early years; according to one estimate there were over 1,000 homes built within 5 miles of Peoria by 1854. One of the earliest businesses open in Peoria was Andrew Sells's grocery which opened its doors on April 12th1847. In 1860 Peoria became an independent municipality with a mayor and six council members. On December 4th 1865 Mayor Davenport issued an ordinance creating a Board of Education for all incorporated towns north of Carbondale with powers "to provide for public instruction" including "the grading and distribution of roads, sidewalks etc., to be made subject to appropriation by said Board." In 1870 when Illinois achieved statehood both towns were consolidated into one municipality under Mayor James Ahern but again continued to enjoy their own elected officials until 1912 when they were merged back into one municipality once more under Mayor Jensorge Freyenhagen The growth of trade brought new settlers into town during this time including many Irish immigrants who arrived beginning around 1875 In 1915 WWI resulted in increased building activity as war production requirements increased After World War I endedPEORIA experienced rapid growth thanks largely to various federal stimulus programs such as the Public Works Administration As total manufacturing jobs decreased during the 1930s PEORIA began experiencing heavy job losses due primarily to industry consolidation within Chicago while other major industrial cities like Detroit or Cleveland experienced smaller declines During this time period also notable changes took place within PEORIA itself with many residents moving away for better opportunities outside of town while others moved into downtown areas vacated by manufacturers

The first school in Peoria was opened in February 1814 by Colonel John Gurney and taught mostly boys. In 1817 the first public road was built through the town and it became known as "The Great Western Road". In 1865 Abraham Lincoln visited Peoria while he was campaigning for president and preached at an opening ceremony of Central High School which later became Northern Illinois University (now Northwestern University). Abraham Lincoln also delivered a speech at the City Hall on November 17, 1865 which is considered to be one of the most important speeches given in American history. On October 3rd 1870 General James K. Polk announced that he had won the election against Andrew Johnson with only 50% of the popular vote. On May 14th 1893 John F Kennedy addressed a crowd of 25 thousand people who had gathered to celebrate his inauguration into office as 44th President of America—the largest crowd ever seen in downtown Chicago until World War II when Truman's parade filled Tribune Park drew 1000000 spectators!

However, economic recession in the late 2000s led to significant decline in Peoria's fortunes; its population fell to 115,000 by 2010. The city has since made significant progress toward revitalization and recovery, however, and is now experiencing increasing popularity as a tourist destination.
