Gun magazines have been around for centuries, and in Peoria, Illinois their history can be traced back to 1885. At that time, the city was home to the first gun magazine in America. The Gunsmiths Arsenal was founded by John Fenton and his brother-in-law Ezekiel Chandler. It was a venture into what would become an industry of great size and importance. The GunsmithsArsenal offeredMagazine sales, where customers could purchase rounds or guns from the store’s staff. This type of business model continued until 1906 when Armoury Magazine closed its doors after 120 years in business. In 1911, Armoury Magazine reopened as the American Armory with a new location at 5th Street and Western Avenue in Peoria. In 1935, Armoury Magazine changed its name to the Peoria Journal Star because it became part of the Sun-Times Newspaper Company which was then bought by Chicago Tribune Newspapers Incorporated (CTP). The company merged with Hearst Corporation in 1947 and soon afterwards moved its publishing operations from Chicago to Peoria where it remains today asThornberry Publishing Company Incorporated (TPI). In 1987 TPI merged with Midway Publications which had been acquired by Hearst Corporation subsidiary Random House Books Incorporated (HRBI). HRBI then merged with Time Warner Entertainment Co., Inc.(TWX) which controlled CBS Corporation(CBS) - one of the largest media companies in America - resulting in TWX taking over all book publishing operations within Hearst Corporation including TPI's Thornberry Publishing Company imprint. In 1999 HRBI sold its interest in Time Warner Entertainment to Rupert Murdoch's News Corp Limited(NWL) who along with others formed 21st Century Fox plc.(FOXA). As part of this transaction, TPI transitioned from being a wholly owned subsidiary of Hearst Corporation to becoming a division of Fox Broadcasting Co., Ltd.(FBC). Today TPI is one of five divisions within Fox Broadcasting Co., Ltd.(FBC) responsible for all broadcast media including television programming; cable TV programming; digital media platforms; print products; and marketing services across all six divisions within FOXA- FOX Television Stations & Cable Networks Division(TVSN), FOX Radio Stations & Digital Media Division(RMAD), FOX Sports Programs & Televisions Division(FSPT), Fox Departments Of Print Products And Marketing Services And Roger Ailes' former production company 'Fox Business Network' (FXBWS) - making it one of the most powerful publishing entities within news broadcasting circles. One significant difference between ancient gun magazines like Armoury Magazine and modern ones is that ancient magazines typically only held rounds while modern magazines hold both rounds AND firearms/ammunition together as one unit!
