In 1908 Peoria became an independent city; it annexed neighboring towns of Aurora and Normalvilleduring a bond election that year. At that time it had a total population of 82,908 people living within its limits only – about one-quarter of which lived inside its downtown area alone! Growth continued into the 21st century: By 2000 Peoria had swollen to over 250,000 residents within its borders only; outside those boundaries it consisted mostly of rural areas including parts of Northwest Illinois known as "the Driftless Area". Peoria has been through several cycles of economic decline starting around 1990 but recent years have seen some growth once again with development taking place throughout downtown area

The first Europeans to visit what is now Peoria were French colonists in 1763, when they claimed land east of the Mississippi River as part of their system of Louisiana Purchase. The town's name may be derived from a Shawnee word meaning "the place where corn flourishes." A post office called Peoria was established in 1809, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1836, John Stephenson built a steamboat dock on the north bank of the river near present-day downtown Peoria and began trading with Native Americans for goods such as corn and dogsledding overland to his farmstead on Canisteo Creek. In 1840, Stephenson donated land to form what would become downtown Peoria; construction began soon after and finished two years later. By 1851, all but one block of what is now downtown had been completed; more blocks were added during subsequent decades. The opening of Union Pacific Railroad through central Illinois brought new industry to town – lumber mills followed shortly thereafter – while also creating an influx of people seeking employment opportunities on the railroad tracks. This period also saw growth within local government: a courthouse and jail were constructed during this time (1851–1868), while an education system bloomed with the establishment of schools (including one for African American students) in 1865. During World War II, Peoria played host to numerous military installations including Project Mulberry which housed up to 40000 soldiers from throughout North America; many local businesses benefited from this wartime activity including manufacturing plants for aircraft parts and ammunition production; however, most notably are its contributions to food production which included both processing meat for shipment overseas and grows for vegetables used domestically.. In recent years much redevelopment has taken place around downtownPeoria with new restaurants/bars/cafes etc located just off I-55 Exit 217A - making it easier than ever get around town without having lots of traffic!
