Park Ridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Park Ridge is located on the east side of Chicago and straddles the border of Cook and Kane counties. The town was organized in 1855 as a result of land grants from George Washington Smith. In 1905, Park Ridge incorporated as an independent village. The village had a population of 614 in 1920 and 1,046 in 1930. It declined to its current size after the death of its first mayor, Homer Merrill Aldrich, Jr., in 1942. Park Ridge experienced rapid growth during World War II due to the munitions industry which had relocated to the area after WWII ended. The war also created new jobs for many residents who had formerly been employed by defense industries such as steel production or shipbuilding. Afterward, however, economic conditions began to decline despite continued industrial growth in Park Ridge through both natural increase and immigration from other parts of Illinois and elsewhere throughout America. In 2000, Park Ridge joined with neighboring Addison Township to form Addison-Parkridge Town Square (APTS). In 2006 APTS adopted a resolution declaring itself an open-air mall that would include twoatelite stores and over 100 businesses including restaurants, movie theaters, sporting events venues and more than 20 percent Lennox Art Therapy studios across six floorspace totaling . In addition to retail space there are three large multi-purpose venues: one for concerts/events (the Blossom Music Center), another for dance/ tragedy (the Sears Centre) and still another for hockey (The United Center).
