Park Ridge was founded in 1873 by farmers from Scotland and Ireland who came to America to escape famine. The name Park Ridges comes from a Scots word meaning "a warm meadow." The first settlers were Patrick Herriot and his family, who arrived in 1873. Other early residents included John Dunlop, James Braidwood, Archibald Alison, Alexander Gillespie and others. In 1881, the community acquired its own post office and school district. From 1902 until 1955 it was part of Du Page County; after that it became a part of Cook County. The village grew rapidly during World War II because of the large numbers of American soldiers stationed there. After the war ended, many businesses closed down and new ones were started up quickly – including an armored car dealership (later known as McAllister & Associates), grocery store (now Wright's Grocery), 7-Eleven convenience store (now Jamba Juice), movie theater (later called Regal Cinemas) and more than 20 small shops and restaurants. In 1965 Park Ridges incorporated as a city under then-mayor Edward Byrne Jr.'s watch; however City Hall only remained open for about two years before being destroyed by fire in 1967. That same year also saw the opening of Highland Park's first municipal park – which still constitutes one-third of its current acreage). It wasn't until 1990 when Park Ridge annexed much of neighboring Aurora Township that it finally had mayoral control over its own affairs - something which has continued to this day with Mayor Tom Barrett presiding over all Parkside activities since 2003 despite having no formal role in government whatsoever!
The original Park Ridge area was part of the Township of Park Ridge, which was organized in 1814. In 1836, the Township of Park Ridge was created as a separate municipality and it remained an independent municipality until it merged with the City of Chicago in 1896. The first settler in what is now Park Ridge was George Washington Smith who came to the area in 1818. He built a log cabin on a bend in the Fox River. The following year, he married Mary Livingston and they started a simple farmstead where they raised livestock and vegetables. Ida Biddle Wright also settled near Park Ridge around this time. She founded her own small grocery store at Niles Corners near Illinois State University before expanding into retail sales later on. Wright also served as Mayor of Chicago from 1886-1892 and she is considered one of its most influential figures. In 1871, David Fenton purchased 2,000 acres (8 hectares) along Lake Michigan shoreline for $10 000 from John Kinney for $2 per acre ($0.50 per hectare). This land became known as Fenton's Forest after him because it would be used for farming, forestry, hunting and pleasure pursuits such as sailingboats and canoes during his lifetime. After his death, his heirs donated 1/3rd of their holdings to Chicago Government College so that city government could have access to the best farmland in town for education purposes only; this gifting remains one of Park Ridge's defining moments today! In 1865 when Illinois became a state with its own government, Parkridge was annexed by Cook County Government - thus becoming part of oneof America's largest cities! Today much of what madeParkridge famous still survives within its boundaries: selective shopping streets like Roosevelt Roadcontinue to draw visitors from all over while schools like ISU continue to educate students adjacent to busy downtown areas
