One of the earliest commercial enterprises was a grocery store operated by James Doherty and Brothers from 1845 to 1850. In 1847, the first post office was established at Park Ridge with Wm Fenton as clerk and John Ahern as postmaster. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the new Chicago & Northwestern Railway line which connected Chicago with other parts of America through Park Ridge village site on the western side of Chicago Lake Michigan shoreline. In 1860, President Abraham Lincoln delivered an address at Point State College located within what is now Downtown Chicago about "the duty of every American citizen to support his government". At that time Point State College had only been open for 10 years and had only graduated a few students; Lincoln's speech helped spur technological development at that college which would soon lead to skyscrapers being built near campus across Dearborn Street – today's Northwestern University – while Point State College would go on to become one of America's leading universities along with Yale University after Abe Lincoln's presidency ended in 1865 when Ulysses S Grant became president

The first post office was established in 1814, and the first store was built in 1821. Park Ridge became a village in 1836 and a town in 1848. In 1916, Park Ridge became an incorporated city.
