Park Ridge, Illinois is a small town in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois. The population was 9,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rockford–Muncie metropolitan area. Park Ridge is one of six villages in Rockford Township, and lies on a bend in the River Des Plaines. The first permanent settler in what became Park Ridge was John Holmwood, who arrived in 1786. The village site was purchased by Anthony Pecorello from Nicholas Lorette and his brother Maurice in 1809. In 1825, Daniel Webster bought 20 acres (80 hectares) southeast of present-day Park Ridge for $4 per acre. He named it Prairie du Chien after his home place near Hartford, Connecticut. In 1827, John Davenport donated land to build a school on what would eventually become Park Rowdy Road and Dearborn Avenue. That year also saw the arrival of Amos Kendall as trustee for the Village School District #2 which included present-day Parkridge and other townships within its boundaries including North Star then Peoria Township In 1830, Andrew Jarrell donated two lots on Elm Street north of what would later become Main Street to establish a public square that still serves as an important commercial center today known as Jarrell Square An act passed by the General Assembly on November 3rd, 1830 established "the Village Board" to manage day-to-day operations within "the Village of Parkridge", including but not limited to "the purchase or condemnation of real estate". The Board consisted initially only of five trustees with power to borrow money for improvements; however this authority gradually grew over time until it had ultimate authority over all aspects of village life On July 1st 1870, following charter passage by Mayor George Wessels (a Democrat) & Trustees Alfred Haggerty & Edward Smith (Republican), Townsite Plan No. 2 was adopted establishing plans for future development withinpresent-dayparkridgeandallofitsvicinitiesincludingnorthstarthenpeoriatownship
On Park Ridge, Illinois, the first white settlement was made in 1809. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who was mayor of Chicago at the time. The town grew quickly and by 1836 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1847, Park Ridge became a village and in 1857 it became a city.
