The history of bullets in Park Ridge, Illinois goes back to the early 1800s. Bullet production began in 1820 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed a new type of gun-shot projectile that could be fired with a bow and arrow. The project was successful and the company continued to produce ammunition until 1865. In 1866, the first factory in Park Ridge produced bullets for the Abraham Lincoln assassination. The bullet was made from Copperhead lead alloy and had a small knurled head on one end and a wide base on the other. It was used as a sniper's rifle ammunition during the American Civil War. In 1907, Park River Ammunition Co., Ltd., started producing projectiles for shotguns and handguns in Park Ridge. These projectiles were made from brass or bronze materials which gave them an orange coloration so they would not stand out against clothing or foliage. Bullet production ended in 1916 because of World War I. From 1919 through 1934, Armour Ammunition Incorporated manufactured rounds for pistols called "Park Rifles." These rounds were made from jacketed steel material which allowed them to penetrate any kind of armor while still retaining their performance as shooting ammunition. In 1935, Armour moved its manufacturing facilities to Redington Arsenal outside Chicago; however, it continued to produce rounds for pistols until 1957 when it merged with Remington Arms Company Incorporated to form Remington Rand Corporation (later Underwood Industries). "Park Rifles" were originally chambered for 3/2 inch diameter rimfire cartridges but these cartridges became obsolete by the late 1920s because they no longer met federal requirements for stopping power due to changes in projectile design. "Park Rifles" were remaining popular into recent decades among law enforcement officers and game shooters because they offer good terminal performance at close range without fear of collateral damage
