It became a city in 1954 when it merged with neighboring Naperville to form the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Park" comes from John M. Park's estate in Scotland which he acquired while living there during the 1850s; he named his new home "Park ridge". According to the 2010 census, 93% of residents are white and 7% are black or African American. Hispanic or Latino residents make up 1% of the population
