The current name of Park Forest comes from where it started - a wooded valley near Hingham Township north of present-day Elmhurst Avenue and south of its junction with Touhy Parkway. One North Branch Ogle Creek flowed through what is now Park Forest before being diverted east for irrigation purposes by means of an old canals that still remain in use today as streets and lanes run along them. The original town site lay within one mile (1 km) or less of this creek's mouth; however, due to travels taken by streams and creeks during agricultural production days many waterlogged areas now exist within park boundaries which were not accessible until recent times when Drainage District 8 constructed reservoirs which have eliminated much flooding in these areas

In 1795, the first permanent European settlement in what is now Park Forest was made. A group of Frenchmen, led by Captain Pierre-André Desclaireure, founded a small farm on the present site of St. Clair Street and High Street. The colonists were soon joined by other Europeans, including British traders and fur trappers, who began hunting and trading in the area. The early Park Forest residents consisted of a few hundred people who built their homes from logs or sod. By 1812, however, the population had grown to about one hundred people and they erected a log cabin known as the Mansion House on Prospect Avenue. In that year too, they voted to name their town Park Forest after President James K. Polk’s home state of Pennsylvania. A number of important events occurred during this early period in Park Forest’s history. On February 12, 1816, members of the First Parish Churchyard Committee organized an election to choose a new pastor for the church which then located at 126th and Keele Streets. The Reverend John Cook took office that year and he would serve until 1827 when he was replaced by Rev George Patton Jr.. From this time forward until 1861 when Park Forest became part of Joliet Township it was under the jurisdiction of that municipality. On November 11th 1830, Judge Augustus DeWitt donated land to be included within Park Forest so that schools could be built there for children living in surrounding townships such as Chicago Heights (now Englewood), Round Lake (now Hinsdale), Lombard (now Downers Grove) and others joining them over time. This donation marks perhaps one of earliest examples of townshiphood status given to a place like Park Forest where individual citizens desired more control over their community affairs than what prevailed within their respective municipalities! This success story continued with many donations being made over time from individuals or businesses – most notably from J[ohn] W[illiam] Kane in1851 which formed part of what is now Kane County – setting off another era characterized by growth & development within our community! As townshiphood evolved into villagehood we witnessed some significant changes take place both inside & outside our boundaries! It wasn’t always easy though; sometimes decisions had to be made quickly as tensions mounted between different groups/families vying for control over various aspects of life within our village/township! But eventually these factions came together under one banner – becoming “The Village Association” -to create common goals & objectives across all areas impacting our daily lives! Park Forrestians have worked hard since then (& continue to do so today!) striving towards stability & prosperity while keeping our memories alive (& shared)!
