In 1837, David Jernigan built an gristmill on current day State Road 2 just east of where US Highway 36 meets State Road 3A today. It became one of Park Forest's earliest businesses and continued operations until it burned down in 1893. The mill made flour for local bread and pastry products as well as other items such as candles and soap; it also served as a community center until 1924 when it was destroyed by fire. The Park Forest community was established in 1868, when a group of farmers on the west side of Chicago organized to create a garden community. The name "Park Forest" was given to the community because of the forest that surrounded it. The first residents were wealthy merchants and bankers from downtown Chicago who purchased land in what is now Park Forest. They soon began building homes and businesses, and by 1872, there were over 100 people living in the area. The years following World War I were difficult for both the Park Forest community and Chicago as a whole. However, due to their strong cooperation, the residents managed to remain resilient during these tough times. In 1924, they formed an agricultural cooperative which helped keep their land fertile while providing support services such as irrigation systems and crop storage. This cooperative lasted until 1935 when it merged with another similar organization. During World War II, many people from Park Forest served in military service either directly or through organizations like American Legion or Veterans Affairs groups. Many of these residents went on to found towns or villages across Illinois after the war ended. One such community was Greenfield Village in 1946 which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Illinois due to its beautiful architecture and historical significance dating back to early 1800s! In recent years, much has changed within Parker Forest- both good and bad- however, everyone remains committed to remaining local as much as possible throughout their lives!
