The armory served as a training ground for officers of the Chicago police force and for other law enforcement personnel. Park Forest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. Park Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is one of the oldest villages in Cook County and was founded in 1847 on land donated by John H. Morton. The Village of Park Forest was incorporated on November 14, 1847, following a referendum held that same day to allow incorporation without payment of taxes for three years. The first board of trustees consisted of eleven men: seven farmers and four mechanics; one blacksmith; and two schoolteachers from Racine, Wisconsin. The trustees were empowered to make all rules necessary for the government of the Village and to exercise all powers not granted to them by statute or ordinance. In 1860, John Wirth became president of the village corporation with permanent headquarters at 171 N State Street in downtown Park Forest. Wirth had been elected as an independent Democrat to a two-year term on the park forest ward seat vacated by Jonathan Mathers after his death in 1859. He continued to serve until his death on December 20, 1861 aged 58 years old typifying that age group which continued to be active into late nineteenth century when many people retired from farming or moved away from rural communities

On October 1, 1847, the first post office in Park Forest opened. The town eventually became a part of the new Chicago area and was annexed by the city on February 14, 1865.
