Park Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. Park Forest is located in the northwestern corner of the county and is bordered by Will County to the north, Rockford Township to the east, and Vernon Township to the south. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was first organized on November 3, 1853 when a group of men from Park Forest purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land in what is now Vernon Township for $5 per acre ($0.30 per hectare). By 1860, there were 156 residents living in Park Forest. It wasn't until 1887 that Park Forest became a city with its own police department and fire department. On April 7, 1907, Mayor John Fenton dedicated a parkland lot located just east of Village Hall as "In Memory of Mrs. Anna Prentiss"). Mrs. Prentiss had been instrumental in forming and donating land for this park which features an amphitheater and playgrounds as well as several cemeteries dating back to 1852-1854. Today's park also includes a large pond used for fishing and swimming as well as tennis courts and two football fields (one which has been renovated), among other amenities.

Park Forest, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois. It was formed on February 3, 1871 when the towns of Park and Forest were merged. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was named for General James K. Polk who served as President of the United States from 1849 to 1853 and signed the Treaty of Paris which ended World War I. Park Forest had a school district until 1954 when it merged with Central School District #1 to form the Chicago Public Schools system. The Village has two churches: First Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Church - both built in 1928. The first African American to serve as Mayor of Park Forest was Alvin Bostic in 1978-79; he also served as Director of Community Relations for the Village Government from 1984-1990. In 1990, the first woman elected to office in Cook County was Jeanine Pirro when she became Mayor Emerita of Park Forrest after serving four terms as a Cook County state representative from north suburban Kane Township (now Naperville). In recent years, much effort has been made by residents and businesses within park forest to promote cultural activities such as music festivals and art exhibitions throughout summer months; this along with a new city hall/council building completed in fall 2006 have helped spur development within park forest boundaries once again
The Park Forest community was founded in 1881, when a group of farmers purchased 1,000 acres of land east of Chicago. The community grew rapidly and by 1912 had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1916 the city annexed Park Forest, creating a new municipality with its own government and school system. The community continued to grow as businesses expanded into the area and families moved in. By the late 1920s the population had reached 5,000 people. In 1930 the City Council decided that Park Forest should be annexation into the city limits due to its growth and development. Park Forest became an official city within Chicago on December 12, 1931.
