Park Forest is a small town in the northern Illinois Valley, located about 30 miles north of Chicago. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rockford metropolitan area. The first inhabitants in Park Forest were Native Americans who lived there before European exploration and settlement began. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through Park Forest on their way to battle against the French in what is now Quebec City. A group of eighteen settlers from Peoria, Illinois arrived in 1827 and founded a log cabin near present-day Park Forest east of what is now I-57 south of Lake Michigan Boulevard. In 1829, Jesse Henson purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-day Park Forest from John Pemberton for $5 per acre. This land was used for farming until it was donated to the city by Henson in 1892 as part of its parkland program. When Chicago became a city in 1896, most of the land within its limits was given to the city as parks or open space. In 1902, Park Forest received a water system when American Water built an aqueduct from nearby Crystal Lake. The town also received electric lights and streetlights in 1907 andImprovements began by American Electric Railway Company (AER) which upgraded all services starting with providing power for streetlights on October 15th 1913 which made Park forest one big light show! During World War II many people worked at Bendix Aircraft Factory located right next door to our townspeople living along I-90 just outside Dearborn Heights! People would go into work early each morning then return home for lunch just like we do today!
The Park Forest community was organized in 1872. The first post office was established in 1873, and the first school was built in 1875. The community's first pastor, Rev. George Fenton, served from 1876-1879. In 1886, the community received its own water system. By 1912, the population had grown to nearly 400 people and a library was established. Park Forest became a city on April 1, 1914.
