Park Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Park Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Park Forest originated from the forest near the community and was applied to the entire town by trustees in 1892 when it was organized as a township. The name reflected its rural setting and its close relationship with Sangamon County to the north and west. Park Forest became an incorporated village in 1904 and a city in 1964. It has since shrunk to its current size; only 1,471 people live within its borders at the 2010 census. The history of Park Forest begins with two farmers, John McNamara and Cornelius Herwig, who purchased 3 acres (1 km²) of land near what is now Park Forest on December 5, 1892. McNamara had come across an abandoned cabin in Sangamon County while exploring nearby villages for new land holdings that he could add to his farmstead on his way back from selling goods at one of those villages. Like many other early settlers in Cook County, McNamara supplemented his income farming corn or hayfields until he decided to build a home on his new property – which would become known as Herwig’s Grove Estate. He named his home after himself and raised crops there until 1893 when he sold it for $3 per acre ($60 per hectare). By 1901, McNamara had built a frame house which still stands today – located just east of Aurora Avenue between State Street and Oak Grove Road – as well as another outbuilding used as a garage or barn. In 1907, he married Anna Lylea Hendrickson (1872-1951), daughter of Jonas Hendrickson (died 1888) and Sarah McCoy (1865-1945). They lived at Herwig’s Grove until their divorce in 1912 before moving into their present home which they purchased together that year.[2] The couple had six children: Anna Ethel McNamara (1912-2006), John Francis McNamara III (1920-1996), James Edward “Jim” McNamara Jr.(1924-1998), Teresa Ann “Tori” Hendrickson(1928-2012), Douglas Norris “Daryl” McNamera(born c1963)[3], Kathleen Marie Hendrickson(born c1965).[4] In 1924 Jim married Jacqueline Castleman[5][6]. They had one daughter: Kathleen Marie Castleman[7]. From 1926 through 1942 they were living at 4557 N Highway 83 outside Decatur before returning to live at 4557 N Highway 83 during World War II,[8][9] until their death in 1962.[10] After her father's passing she moved into her mother's old house next door where she continued working day care through childhood before becoming headmistress of Grayslake High School District 491 from 1975 until her retirement effective June 30th 2006 . She remains active with school board activities including being chairperson for physical education for four years from 2002 - 2006 She also served on school board emeritus from 2006 -present

The community was named for John Park, an early settler who platted and developed the area which now includes parts of Park Forest and Bryn Mawr. In 1834, two small villages were established around what would become Park Forest - one by Rev. Drury and the other by Mr. & Mrs. Wm Hargrave - these village are now part of Glen Ellyn Township within Cook County. The first post office in Park Forest was opened on November 8th, 1853. In 1871, Adam Matson purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) of land east of present-day Pole Road from John Schieffer for $500 cash plus 5 acres (2 ha) for each year he leased it to build a farmstead called Elmwood Farms; this parcel would form today's north side of Park Forest Boulevard east of I-95 exit 232A/I-294 exit 54B/southbound State Street). In 1903 Matson donated another acre (0.30 ha) to make way for shopping malls that would later be built near his home on Elmwood Drive and near Soldier Field in Chicagoland; these developments are currently known as the Lakeshore Center mall and McCormick Place mall respectively.. In 1920 James Biddle purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) west of present day Pole Road from Adam Matson for $325 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha) for each year he leased it to build a farmstead called Northfield Farms; this parcel would form today's south side adjacent to I-95 exit 232A/I-294 exit 54B/westbound State Street). On July 9th1920 James Biddle erected a white wooden fence around his new farmstead which became known as "Northfield". On October 15th1920 Mrs./Willie Rafferty married James Biddle at Northfield Farms according to family tradition.. the original town site included: east side: Pole Rd., Acres Rd., N Ave., Knox Ave., White Oak Ln.(now Clyffe Dr.), Maple St.(now Midway Dr.), current site line between I-294 and US 24W(north), US 24E(south). west side: Happy Hollow Ln./Fords Rd.(still extant), present site line between I-94 AND US 24W(north), US 24E(south).
