An early settler in what would become Park Forest was John Denton who arrived in 1847 with his family from Kentucky . In 1850 he erected a log cabin on land that would soon be renamed for General James K Polk after his inauguration as President that year In 1855 Denton married Anna Wetzel and their first child was born in this cabin: Anna Elizabeth Denton . Over time many more families came here, including those from Kentucky , Tennessee , Indiana , Ohio , Maryland There were three churches in Park Forest when it first took shape as an agricultural settlement: First Presbyterian Church built around 1860 ; Methodist Episcopal Church built about 1870 ; African Methodist EpiscopalChurch built about 1890 park forest post office opened September 3th 1865 - mail carried there until 1840's when Stephenson's store closed down water main break caused line extension 2 miles due west to go under US Rte 50 so post office moved east side where current building now stands

Park Forest was an agricultural community in Cook County, Illinois. It was located in the southwest corner of the county, between the communities of Westmont and Mount Prospect. The population of Park Forest was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The community began as a small village on a tract of land that had been given to it by John Sarsfield in 1874. In 1915, Park Forest became a town under the name of Aurora. It remained an unincorporated community until its incorporation into Cook County in 1956. The community is named after Drury Greenaway Park, who served as president of Sears Roebuck and Company from 1902 to 1907 and as mayor of Chicago from 1912 to 1916. In 1896, a group of men organized what would become known as "The Pioneers," which aimed to create parkland for public use within the boundaries of what would become Park Forest. The first public park in Park Forest was opened in 1909 at Franklin Avenue and Western Boulevard. From 1911 to 1971, Parks Department employees operated Elmwood Lake State Recreation Area adjacent to Franklin Avenue and Prairie Road; this area is now known as Oak Cliff Hills Recreation Area .
Park Forest was first settled in 1837 by a group of Upper Mississippian men. The land at Park Forest was given to them by the government after the Battle of Fallen Timbers, which ended the Native American uprising against U.S. rule in Illinois. The men who founded Park Forest built a small settlement on the site and named it for their home town of Quincy, Massachusetts. During the 1840s, Park Forest grew rapidly as a result of its location near an open-air market and its close proximity to other settlements in what is now central Illinois. By 1851, over 300 people lived in Park Forest and it had become an important center for industry and trade in central Illinois. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Park Forest became part of the newly formed Union Territory of Kansas. In 1865, following another outbreak of Indian unrest throughout central Illinois, President Andrew Johnson ordered the United States Army to establish military posts along all sides of the state line with specific goals including suppression of Indian activity. The army established three posts at Park Forest – one on top of Mount Zion Cemetery, one next to Round Top Lake and one south of present-day Drake University – within two years’ time. The posts were manned by unpaid soldiers who were used primarily as revenue collectors and stopped being used entirely during Reconstruction period (1868-1933). During this time period many park family members relocated from Quincy to various post locations across central Illinois while others purchased or inherited homes thereon until they moved out altogether during World War II when much Of Springfield's agricultural production was diverted into war materials production centers outside Of Springfield because Of lack thereof housing stock available locally
